Including teachers across disciplines in the reading project

Writes Kathy Burnette, media specialist at Discovery Middle School in Granger, Indiana

I think what worked so well for us was having all of the 7th grade students and all teachers who worked with 7th graders read the book, not just the language arts teachers. The language arts teachers also had a copy of the Teacher's Guide from the Farrar, Straus, Giroux website, a unit plan from The Revealers website, and some writing/discussion prompts from the Anti-Defamation League site. Teachers didn't have to use any of this material, but they had it available for background info.

We also planned two days of events, including "Stump the Teacher" - where students asked a panel of teachers questions about the book - and a visit from Doug.
